Snapchat is planning to release its very own Google Glass called Spectacles
Ever imagine yourself wearing a pair of technology-enhanced glasses in the near future? Probably not. And you are not alone! A solid majority of today’s tech consumers are just not yet ready for it, which can clearly be seen by the lack of demand when it comes to the Google Glass. However, what if wearing such glasses would allow you to share content with your friends instantly? or ever more so, not look like the odd one out in a crowd.
Snap Inc. CEO Evan Spiegel just announced a new pair of “futuristic” glasses through an evening article on WSJ. The glasses are called ‘spectacles’ and are capable of recording 10-second videos, which can be seamlessly shared via your iPhone or Android devices.
Yes, I agree, why do we need this? I might have asked myself the same question multiple times. Do we have users who would use such a product or will this end up being a decade-long project like Google Glass. However, Spiegel disagrees and explains:
He remembers testing a prototype in early 2015 while hiking with his fiancée, supermodel Miranda Kerr. “It was our first vacation, and we went to Big Sur for a day or two. We were walking through the woods, stepping over logs, looking up at the beautiful trees. And when I got the footage back and watched it, I could see my own memory, through my own eyes—it was unbelievable. It’s one thing to see images of an experience you had, but it’s another thing to have an experience of the experience. It was the closest I’d ever come to feeling like I was there again.”
Only time will tell if Spiegel latest venture will take flight once brought into the market, as the device is pricey at $129, which in my opinion is not attractive to the teenage user base of Snapchat and will definitely affect growth.
